The Calligrapher Bible 100 Complete Alphabets and How to Draw Them David Harris 0027011056154 Books Reviews
- As an old guy with a 7-year-old granddaughter who is showing interest and budding talent in creating letterforms, I purchased this book/workbook as a means to introduce her to calligraphy. It's a good one, with a brief history of calligraphy prior to illuminating the way to creating letters, with stroke-by-stroke guidance and a wonderfully designed layout. The weight of the paper is substantial, approaching a card stock thickness, and it looks as though this book will take a beating and survive. Now I have to shop for some calligraphic pens...
Happy with this purchase, and eager to get started in my new role as an assistant to a new calligrapher! - My niece loves this book!
- Wasn't sure if I'd like the spiral binding, but it does let the book lay flat so that's a plus. Does squeak however. Lots of fonts (almost too many, as I can never find the one I wanted to work on if I don't remember the name. But happy about the limitless possibilities) The instructions are great, very thorough.
- Alphabets, AND the stroke order! Not just 100 fonts printed in bulk, but careful details on actually inking these beautiful glyphs.
- This is a wonderful book! I teach calligraphy, and love that it gives such clear examples and a tiny bit of history to make the learning more interesting. The range of different scripts is amazing and the book gives clear pictures for both capital and miniscule (small) letters for each alphabet script shown. This has become one of my favorite calligraphy books for teaching a broad range of different types of scripts! It is great for beginners or experienced calligraphers! I highly recommend this book.
- Has the basic styles of calligraphy in it. Includes Roman, Post Roman, Insular, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Mondern styles. The first 32 pages include an intro and a tools/papers guide. It's a good basic reference book. If you like this, you might also like my personal favorite, 'The Bible of Illuminated Letters' by Margaret Morgan. Another book with a more in depth history and many photographic examples of various ancient calligraphy styles is Marc Drogan's 'Medievil Calligraphy' book. I tend to refer to these books more often now that I developed my own style and tastes. I do some illustrating and scribe work for people as a hobby. I am self taught and I have found these 3 books very useful.

.c - This is a great book to have for referencing various scripts. I especially love the spiral binding - makes it easy to keep the page open to what you're reading or trying to duplicate.
Harris explains the techniques and strokes for several popular calligraphy styles - including my personal favorite the Pointed Quadrata Minuscule! The pen angle and letter angle are detailed in photos - it's very easy to follow. There are also more "modern" type styles for people who are interested in creating something a little more contemporary.
It's a very nice and helpful book. Harris explains the font and what makes it different. It's been very helpful to me.
