Blainie Carpet Barn Peter Gorham 9781621471967 Books Reviews
- You might think this is a book about caregiving but it isn't. It is a very colorful true story of a man's journey of taking care of his aging parents till they pass away. It is heart warming and brings warm chuckles to your heart. Did I say it was interesting? Probably the best family sitcom could be drawn from this book. The author has a beautiful way of portraying his parents character and what he experienced with them. This is a very uplifting true even of real people's lives. You will just love his father.
- For anyone who has a parent - yes, that would be everyone - you really must read Blainie's Carpet Barn written by our good friend Pete Gorham. It is the story of his dad, Blaine Gorham in the later years of his life. It is also Pete's story, of moving from being the son, to becoming the caregiver to his parents. I knew Blaine - and he was indeed a "character"! Pete's stories about Blaine will have you laughing out loud...but also shedding tears. You'll recognize the emotions within yourself, and you'll recognize those among us who are no longer who they once were, but who yet are our heroes.
Pete skillfully uses words as his captives, capturing moments wrapped in feeling to present to his readers. Although I had already read Blainie's Carpet Barn as an early gift from Pete, I was tremendously excited to see it on my this morning. I have no doubt that this beautifully composed presentation of love will touch the hearts of many.
Blainie's Carpet Barn - Blainie's Carpet Barn A wonderful, sensitive book about a man who was everyone's friend. Peter has written a loving book about this special man who was our friend too. But, whether you knew Blaine or not, the book is a Must Read. Chuck and Fisty highly recommend it.
- A wonderful book about love and caring. The author did a wonderful job and I high recommend reading this book!
- What a beautiful story. Non fiction,Gorham chronicles the final years of his father's life. He takes us along and we witness his parents moving form their home into a senior care facility, losing their auto and their independence, losing friends, losing physical abilities and finally, losing mental faculties. We witness the struggles and the indignities that old age dishes out to anyone sturdy enough to reach it. And we are witness to the difficulties heaped on the elderly and on their caregivers when the insurance companies deny payment for things that would make life so much better.
Right now, you might be wondering why anyone would want to read a story about that. The thing is, even though it's a story about aging and it ultimately goes where all of us will, it's more so a story about love, about a boy and his father (and his mom), about caring, about family, about understanding, and about patience.
Gorham's voice was made to write this! He's plainspoken, yet his intelligence comes through loud and clear. The story shows a gentle patience with his father, and a quiet and humble acceptance of his aging parents' increased frailty.
Blainie had a golden sense of humor into his old age, and Gorham wrote it well.
The book made me feel like I missed knowing a true gem of a man--Blainie, and glad that he had a son--the author. I wish that we all could be so honored to have a wonderful recollection written about us after we've gone - This book is about how a son steps up to one of the most difficult positions in life...caring for your aging parents. It's a tricky switch from your parents taking care of and being there for you to you taking care of and being there for your parents. He not only did it with grace, humor, patience and empathy, but he was able to express his experience in this book. It is heartfelt and amusing, and a road many of us will soon be on ourselves. I am thankful for this insight Blainie's Carpet Barn has provided.
- Peter Gorham's book, Blaine's Carpet Barn, tells the story of the last decade of both his mother and father. Pete trusted the circumstances created by his archetypal trickster father and his long suffering mother to unfold the story, and in this way he honored them without force or judgment. In reality, Peter Gorham physically nourished them, maintained their finances for them, cared about them, comforted them, protected them when necessary, and with a maturity that is enviable encouraged them to go home to the mysterious power from whence we all come . In the writing about that experience, he created a book that is a wonder. It draws on an energy exemplified by the parents that completes both the story and the author. It describes, in its telling of the last decade of Blaine Gorham's life, the very nature of life. Every Being in the universe is an expression of the Intelligence of Being, which exists perfect, free, and compassionate. Compassion creates without possessing, acts without expecting, guides without interfering. In becoming his father's father, Peter Gorham and this story demonstrate that level of compassion. Everyone whose parents reach the stage in life whereupon they are reliant on their children, will benefit from the wisdom in this book.
